There is a lot going on in this poem, but it has two main themes: my return to creative writing as well as the return of My Chemical Romance. Gerard Way, the front man of MCR, inspired me to start writing many years ago, so the reunion was very important to me.
MCR’s reunion show was on December 20, 2019, but they didn’t come on until after midnight in my time zone. Therefore, their return fell on the 21st, which is also the Winter Solstice, a time of rebirth. The poem is filled with tons of My Chemical Romance references as well as celestial imagery.
Basically, their reunion and my decision to start writing again intersected at the same time and play off of each other. They push me to be more creative.
Another key part of this poem is the idea that I am not a god. During my senior year of undergrad, my professor told me that many of my poems came off as “self righteous.” She wasn’t necessarily wrong, but her words have stuck with me and made me very self conscious about my poetry. I was scared everything I write will come off that way. I felt I needed to move address this in my first new poem, so I could get past this fear.
The god reference is also important because I see Gerard and the other members of the band as gods of creativity who continuously inspire me. I feel that I am nowhere near their level but I hope to be one day.
